What's Happening?
Jersey students at Mont a l'Abbe School experienced a live performance of African music by Otto and the Mutapa Calling, a marimba band. The band visited the school to share their culture and heritage with
neurodiverse children. Otto Gumaelius, the founder of the band, expressed his joy in sharing their music, which he believes connects people and lifts spirits. The students were also given the opportunity to learn how to play some of the instruments used by the band, enhancing their cultural understanding and appreciation.
Why It's Important?
The event highlights the importance of cultural exchange and music as a tool for education and emotional well-being. By introducing students to diverse musical traditions, such initiatives can foster inclusivity and broaden cultural perspectives. Music has the power to uplift and connect individuals, providing therapeutic benefits, especially for neurodiverse children. Such experiences can contribute to a more inclusive society by promoting understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
