What's Happening?
Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service (SFS) has introduced a new undergraduate study abroad program, the 'Georgetown Semester in Jakarta: Geopolitics, Development, and Sustainability in Indonesia,' at Georgetown SFS Asia Pacific (GSAP). This
program offers an immersive educational experience focusing on policy perspectives, development priorities, and geopolitical challenges within the Global South. Located in Jakarta, a key regional economy and the diplomatic hub for the ASEAN Secretariat, the program provides students with direct exposure to critical issues shaping the Indo-Pacific. The curriculum combines interdisciplinary coursework with field visits and direct engagement with local policymakers, civil society leaders, and regional institutions. Students will reside in a vetted apartment complex in Central Jakarta and participate in a two-week pre-semester intensive for Indonesian language skills and cultural immersion excursions.
Why It's Important?
This new program is significant for U.S. higher education and foreign policy engagement. It provides American undergraduates with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand understanding of the Indo-Pacific region, which is increasingly vital for global geopolitics and economic development. By immersing students in Indonesia, a leading economy in Southeast Asia, Georgetown is preparing future leaders with a nuanced perspective on the Global South. The program's focus on geopolitics, development, and sustainability directly addresses complex global challenges, equipping students with practical skills and knowledge to contribute to international relations and policy-making. This initiative also strengthens academic ties between the U.S. and Indonesia, fostering cross-cultural understanding and potential future collaborations in research and policy.
What's Next?
The Georgetown Semester in Jakarta program is open to Georgetown undergraduates starting in their sophomore year, awarding 15 Georgetown credits for a semester of study. Applicants must have completed at least one full semester on campus and be in good standing with their academic requirements. The program's structure, including foundational courses like 'Indonesia and the Global South' and 'Indonesia in Time and Space,' alongside electives in geopolitics, sustainability, and community development, indicates a comprehensive academic approach. The inclusion of a pre-semester language intensive and cultural immersion excursions suggests a commitment to preparing students for a deep engagement with Indonesian society. The program is expected to continue leveraging GSAP's network for immersive field experiences, building on previous successes like an SFS student's research on sustainability in Indonesia's blue swimming crab fishery.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate academic benefits, this program reflects a broader strategic shift in U.S. engagement with the Indo-Pacific. By establishing a robust academic presence in Jakarta, Georgetown University is contributing to the development of a new generation of American professionals who possess deep regional expertise and cross-cultural competence. This is crucial for navigating the complex geopolitical landscape and fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties. The emphasis on sustainability and community development within the curriculum also highlights a growing recognition of interconnected global challenges and the need for interdisciplinary solutions. The program implicitly acknowledges the importance of soft power and educational exchange in shaping international perceptions and building long-term relationships, moving beyond traditional state-centric approaches to foreign policy.
