What's Happening?
TotalEnergies has inaugurated the Hydra project in South Africa's Northern Cape province, marking it as Africa's largest hybrid renewable energy project. The facility combines a 216-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant with a 500-megawatt-hour battery energy storage
system. Developed by a consortium including TotalEnergies, Hydra Storage Holding, and Reatile Renewables, the project aims to provide 75 MW of dispatchable renewable electricity to South Africa's national grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom. The project is expected to generate over 400 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 200,000 South African households. This initiative is part of South Africa's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, which seeks to attract private investment into electricity generation.
