What's Happening?
A new solar farm is set to be developed on a brownfield site within the Xerox campus in Webster, New York. The project, known as the Webster Solar Garden, received final site plan approval from the town's planning board. Developed by Montate Solar, the facility
will add 5 megawatts of renewable energy capacity and cover 19 acres of land. The site includes an inactive and capped landfill, and the project will operate under a 25-year lease with potential extensions.
Why It's Important?
This development is a significant step in repurposing brownfield sites for renewable energy projects, contributing to environmental sustainability and energy diversification. By utilizing previously unused land, the project supports local and state goals for increasing renewable energy capacity. The initiative also reflects a growing trend of integrating solar energy into corporate campuses, which can reduce operational costs and carbon footprints.
