What's Happening?
The World Internet Conference Global Youth Leadership Program, now in its fourth year, has selected 20 young leaders from over 140 countries and regions to focus on internet governance, government policies, and international collaboration in internet-related
fields. These young professionals, including Flora Okine from Ghana, Ignacio Araya from Chile, Laura Iancu from Romania, Lyantoniette Chua from the Philippines, Motunrayo Fatoke from Nigeria, and Nuwoe Kellen from Liberia, are actively contributing to digital policymaking. They emphasize that the future of the digital economy relies on technological innovation, international cooperation, and meaningful youth participation. Their initiatives include advancing digital capacity and mentorship networks, promoting China-Latin America dialogue on digital governance, developing a global youth exchange on responsible institutional AI, building bridges for AI governance, and strengthening youth participation in global internet governance.
Why It's Important?
The involvement of global youth leaders in digital governance is crucial for shaping inclusive and sustainable digital policies. Their diverse perspectives, particularly from developing countries, ensure that emerging technologies like AI and next-generation communication networks are leveraged to accelerate sustainable development for underserved communities. By actively participating in policymaking, these young professionals can help prevent digital divides and ensure equitable access to technological advancements. Their focus on international cooperation and cross-border collaboration is vital for establishing global standards and frameworks for AI governance and cybersecurity, which are increasingly critical in an interconnected world. This initiative highlights the growing recognition of youth as key stakeholders in addressing complex global challenges related to technology and governance.
What's Next?
The selected youth leaders plan to implement various initiatives, including launching a Global Youth AI Governance Lab, developing an open-access briefing on responsible institutional AI, and fostering mentorship networks. These efforts aim to bring together young researchers, policymakers, and innovators to develop practical solutions for AI governance through research, dialogue, and cross-border collaboration. The program will continue to expand its global reach and influence, with future iterations likely to involve more young applicants and leaders. The ongoing engagement of these youth leaders is expected to contribute to more inclusive and effective digital policies, influencing how governments and international organizations approach technological advancements and their societal impacts.
