The Indiana Attorney General's office has launched formal investigations into 30 major fuel retailers following consumer complaints of price gouging. This action comes after Governor Mike Braun declared an energy emergency in April, which temporarily
suspended the state's 7% gasoline sales tax and the 36-cents-a-gallon excise tax on gasoline. The Attorney General, Todd Rokita, reported receiving over 170 complaints since the emergency declaration, prompting these investigations. The office is also conducting informal inquiries into price fluctuations at an additional 100 gas stations. Investigators are comparing retail prices to wholesale fuel prices from seven days before the executive order to ensure compliance. An internal dashboard has been created to track prices at 4,600 gas stations, which is now available to the public for monitoring and submitting complaints.
