What's Happening?
A complex engineering operation is underway in Hampshire to slide an 8,500-tonne concrete structure into place for a new underpass on the M27 motorway. This project, part of a £100 million initiative by Hampshire County Council and National Highways,
aims to improve access to the motorway. The 'box slide' method being used is considered pioneering, involving precision technology to move the structure 65 meters beneath the motorway. The motorway is closed in both directions until early January to facilitate this work.
Why It's Important?
The M27 junction project is significant for regional infrastructure, promising to enhance connectivity and traffic flow in Hampshire. By improving access to the motorway, the project supports economic growth and development, particularly benefiting the Welborne Garden Village development. The use of advanced engineering techniques also showcases innovation in infrastructure projects, potentially setting a precedent for future developments.
