What's Happening?
The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Japan are collaborating on a project to support regenerative agriculture in Ethiopia's Jimma Zone. This initiative, named Evidence-based Regenerative Agriculture to Address Climate Change in Africa, is funded by
the Policy and Human Resource Development Grant (PHRDG), a Japan-financed trust fund managed by AfDB. The project aims to help smallholder farmers achieve higher productivity, healthier soils, and more resilient farming systems. It addresses challenges such as soil acidity, declining fertility, and low productivity. The project has already shown significant productivity gains, with wheat and maize yields increasing by 89% and 272% respectively. The initiative involves farmer training, climate-resilient crop varieties, and digital agriculture technology.
