What's Happening?
The Atlanta Hawks, in partnership with Georgia Power, are continuing their commitment to fostering future talent through the HBCU Pathways Program. This initiative, now in its fourth year, is designed to support students from Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs) in Georgia by providing them with career exposure, professional development resources, and access to industry leaders. Since its inception in 2023, the program has successfully helped 21 students secure full-time positions across various industries, including sports, entertainment, and corporate sectors. The program offers a 10-week paid internship experience with the Atlanta Hawks, providing hands-on, real-world experience in departments such as Brand Communications, Global Partnerships, Retail, Digital Marketing, and more. The initiative is part of a broader mission by Georgia Power to uplift communities and create meaningful career pathways for HBCU students.
Why It's Important?
This partnership between the Atlanta Hawks and Georgia Power is significant as it addresses the need for increased diversity and inclusion within industries that have historically lacked representation from minority groups. By providing HBCU students with real-world experience and professional development, the program not only enhances their career prospects but also contributes to a more diverse workforce. This initiative aligns with Georgia Power's broader mission of community empowerment and educational access, reflecting a sustained commitment to supporting HBCUs. The program's success in securing full-time positions for its participants highlights its effectiveness in bridging the gap between education and employment, offering a model for other organizations to follow.
What's Next?
The application window for the 2025 cohort of the HBCU Pathways Program is open until January 16, 2026. As the program continues to grow, it is expected to expand its reach and impact, potentially increasing the number of internship placements and the range of departments involved. The ongoing collaboration between the Atlanta Hawks and Georgia Power may inspire similar partnerships across other industries, further promoting diversity and inclusion. Stakeholders, including educational institutions and corporate partners, are likely to monitor the program's outcomes closely, considering its potential as a blueprint for future initiatives aimed at supporting minority students.
