What's Happening?
ICRISAT organized a high-level webinar to mark the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, focusing on scalable solutions for crop improvement and production technologies for the Global South. The event, chaired by Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, brought together global leaders and over 1000 participants to discuss the role of the Global South in driving agricultural solutions. Key figures such as Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of FAO, and Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of CGIAR, emphasized the importance of collective action and collaboration to ensure no region or farmer is left behind. The discussions highlighted the need for scalable technologies and agricultural solutions that address national priorities and are accessible to those who need them most.
Why It's Important?
The webinar underscores the critical role of South-South cooperation in addressing global agricultural challenges such as climate change, conflict, and trade disruptions. By fostering collaboration and sharing innovations, countries in the Global South can build resilient and equitable food systems. This approach not only enhances food security but also empowers local communities and farmers by providing them with proven solutions that can be adapted and scaled. The event highlights the potential for collaborative innovation to advance research and ensure food and nutrition security for millions, which is vital for sustainable development and economic stability in these regions.
What's Next?
The ICRISAT Center of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (ISSCA) will continue to serve as a hub for sharing knowledge and co-developing innovations. With over ninety scalable innovations already featured on the ISSCA platform, there is a strong global call to submit additional innovations that can further advance agricultural cooperation. The ongoing collaboration between CGIAR institutions and national agricultural research systems (NARS) is expected to accelerate impact and drive the development of resilient farming systems and sustainable production technologies.
Beyond the Headlines
The emphasis on South-South cooperation reflects a shift towards more inclusive and equitable global agricultural practices. By prioritizing homegrown solutions and leveraging the strengths of the Global South, this approach challenges traditional models of agricultural development that often rely on external inputs. It also highlights the ethical dimension of ensuring that innovations are accessible to all, promoting a more balanced distribution of resources and opportunities across different regions.
