In August 2023, Tropical Storm Hilary struck Southern California, prompting 22 juvenile great white sharks to temporarily abandon their nursery off San Diego. Researchers from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography and California State University,
Long Beach tracked the sharks using acoustic tags, noting their departure as the storm hit and their return once conditions improved. The storm, a rare event for the region, caused a sudden drop in sea-surface temperature and rough coastal conditions, disrupting the sharks' habitat. The study provides the first direct evidence of juvenile white sharks responding to an extreme weather event, highlighting their vulnerability to sudden environmental changes.
