What's Happening?
HyImpulse, a German-based launch startup, has announced securing €45 million ($52.5 million) in funding to advance its space launch capabilities. The funding is split between €15 million from private investors
and €30 million from public funds. This financial boost is part of HyImpulse's Series A round, led by Campus Founders Ventures, with participation from several other investors. Since its inception in 2018, HyImpulse has raised approximately €74 million, positioning it as one of the most well-capitalized European launch companies. The company is developing a three-stage small launcher, SL1, using hybrid propulsion, and aims to market it as a 'flexible taxi service' to space. HyImpulse is also working on a suborbital rocket, SR75, which had its debut test flight last year, with plans for a commercial flight as early as next year.
Why It's Important?
The funding for HyImpulse is significant as it addresses Europe's need for independent access to space, reducing reliance on non-European launch services. This development is crucial for enhancing Europe's competitiveness in the global space industry. By advancing its launch capabilities, HyImpulse could play a pivotal role in the European space sector, potentially leading to increased innovation and economic growth. The investment also reflects growing confidence in the commercial space sector, highlighting the strategic importance of space technology in modern defense and commercial applications.
What's Next?
HyImpulse plans to accelerate the commercialization of its orbital rocket, with the first commercial flight of the SR75 expected next year. The SL1 rocket is projected for its first flight in 2027. As HyImpulse progresses, it may attract further investment and partnerships, potentially influencing the broader European space industry. The company's success could inspire other startups and contribute to a more robust European space ecosystem.
