What's Happening?
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has introduced a new initiative aimed at helping older adults access fresh produce. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program provides seniors with a benefit card to purchase fruits and vegetables at participating
farmers' markets and farm stands. This program is particularly popular in Washington County, with Mountain Valley Orchards in Smithsburg being a notable participant. The initiative includes 200 farm stands and 100 farmers' markets across Maryland, offering a wide variety of fresh produce to seniors.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant as it addresses food accessibility and nutrition for seniors, a demographic often facing challenges in obtaining fresh produce. By facilitating access to local farmers' markets, the program not only supports the health and well-being of older adults but also boosts local agriculture by increasing sales for farmers. This initiative reflects a broader trend of integrating community health with local economic support, potentially serving as a model for similar programs in other states.
