New research from Mass General Brigham indicates that consuming one or more sugary drinks daily could nearly triple the risk of developing stomach cancer. The study, which analyzed data from over 100,000 participants in the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals
Follow-Up Study, found a significant association between regular intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and an increased risk of gastric cancer. This finding remained consistent even after accounting for other risk factors. According to CDC data, approximately 63% of U.S. adults consume sugar-sweetened beverages at least once a day. While previous studies have connected sugary drinks to higher rates of liver, breast, and colorectal cancers, their specific impact on gastric tissue was previously unclear. The research defined sugar-sweetened drinks as regular sodas, fruit punches, lemonade, and sports beverages, with fructose identified as the main sweetener. Conversely, artificially sweetened drinks, such as diet sodas, were not linked to an increased risk of gastric cancer.
