What's Happening?
Indian Hills Community College has launched a podcast, 'What’s Up Warriors?', as a strategic initiative to enhance communication with its internal community, including faculty, staff, and students, as well as external constituents across its 10-county
service region in South Central and Southeast Iowa. The podcast, which involves students from the Interactive Media Technology program in its production, aims to share stories about the college's academic programs, athletic achievements, and community involvement. Matt Thompson, President of Indian Hills Community College, and Sarah Dias, Senior Online Instructional Designer, highlighted that the podcast provides real-world, hands-on experience for students in media production, hosting, and editing. The initiative seeks to overcome initial reluctance from faculty and staff to participate by showcasing the ease and value of sharing their passions and program successes. The college plans for quarterly releases, focusing on quality content that can be distributed through social media to alumni and the broader community.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it demonstrates an innovative approach by an educational institution to foster community engagement and provide practical learning experiences. By integrating students directly into the production process, Indian Hills Community College is offering valuable workforce preparation in media and social media presence, which are increasingly critical skills. The podcast serves as a dynamic communication tool, moving beyond traditional methods like emails and intranets, to connect with a wider audience and humanize the college experience. For the college, it's an opportunity to highlight its diverse programs and community contributions, potentially attracting future students and strengthening alumni ties. The project also addresses the challenge of content creation and participation by building internal enthusiasm and demonstrating the positive impact of sharing personal and professional stories.
What's Next?
Indian Hills Community College plans to continue producing 'What’s Up Warriors?' with quarterly releases, aiming to maintain quality content without overwhelming student producers. The college is actively seeking to expand its content by inviting alumni to share their post-graduation experiences and involving current student ambassadors to discuss their college journeys. There are also plans to feature community members who interact with the college, such as local business owners who support students. The team is working to compile a robust list of potential guests, leveraging the growing enthusiasm from initial episodes. The college also introduced a virtual aspect to the podcast, allowing participation from individuals located further away, which will facilitate broader engagement. The goal is to ensure the podcast's sustainability and continued value for both the college and its wider community.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'What’s Up Warriors?' podcast represents a broader trend in educational institutions utilizing digital media to bridge communication gaps and enhance experiential learning. This initiative goes beyond simple marketing; it cultivates a sense of belonging and shared identity within the college community and extends its reach into the surrounding region. Ethically, it empowers students by giving them a voice and practical skills, while also promoting transparency and accessibility of information about the college's offerings. The project also highlights the evolving role of community colleges as hubs for local engagement and workforce development, demonstrating how they can adapt to new technologies to serve their educational and community missions more effectively. The success of this podcast could serve as a model for other institutions looking to create authentic connections and provide relevant, hands-on learning opportunities.
