The Sainsbury Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is providing a limited number of fully funded scholarships for both international and domestic students. These scholarships are designed to support exceptional students pursuing the MA
in The Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Each comprehensive scholarship package includes full tuition fees, which are £25,000 for international students and £11,750 for home students. Additionally, recipients will receive a maintenance grant of £15,000. The scholarship also covers the reimbursement of visa costs and the UK health surcharge, if applicable, along with one economy class return journey between the student's home and Norwich, subject to valid receipts. An extra £650 is allocated for travel expenses related to the MA program, including museum visits. To be considered, applicants must apply for the MA program by January 31, 2027.
Why It's Important?
This scholarship program is significant because it removes financial barriers for talented students, enabling them to pursue specialized postgraduate education in a critical field of study. The focus on the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas contributes to a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse global cultures, which is increasingly important in an interconnected world. By attracting both international and home students, the program fosters a rich and diverse academic environment, promoting cross-cultural dialogue and research. The comprehensive nature of the scholarship, covering tuition, living expenses, and travel, ensures that students can fully dedicate themselves to their studies without financial strain, thereby enhancing the quality of their academic experience and research output. This initiative also strengthens the University of East Anglia's position as a leading institution for the study of non-Western art and cultural heritage.

Beyond the Headlines
The Sainsbury Research Unit's scholarship program has broader implications for the academic landscape of art history and cultural studies. By investing in the study of non-Western art, the program helps to decolonize curricula and promote a more inclusive understanding of global artistic traditions. This initiative can lead to new research methodologies, critical perspectives, and a more balanced representation of art historical narratives. Furthermore, the support for international students enhances academic diplomacy and cultural exchange, fostering a global network of scholars dedicated to these fields. The program also highlights the importance of philanthropic support in higher education, demonstrating how targeted funding can create opportunities for individuals and advance specialized areas of knowledge that might otherwise be under-resourced.
