What's Happening?
Acacia Systems, based in South Australia, has completed a government-funded project to enhance the Royal Australian Navy's undersea surveillance capabilities. The project, funded by the Defence Innovation Partnership, aimed to advance Acacia's Onyx software
for improved underwater threat detection. Following this, a new collaboration with the University of New South Wales has been announced to further develop the software. Onyx is already deployed in the RAN's Hobart-class destroyers and licensed for export to allied navies. This initiative reflects Australia's commitment to strengthening its maritime security through advanced technology.
Why It's Important?
The enhancement of undersea surveillance capabilities is crucial for Australia's national security, particularly in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. By leveraging AI and autonomy, Australia aims to improve the accuracy and range of threat detection, ensuring the protection of its maritime interests. This development not only strengthens the Royal Australian Navy but also positions Australia as a leader in defense technology innovation. The collaboration between industry and academia further underscores the importance of research and development in maintaining a competitive edge in defense capabilities.
