What's Happening?
The Director of AIIMS Delhi, Professor M Srinivas, has issued a warning against the self-medication of antibiotics, echoing concerns raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 'Mann Ki Baat' address. The warning highlights the growing issue of antimicrobial
resistance (AMR), which is exacerbated by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. The World Health Organization has identified self-medication, easy access to antibiotics, and incomplete medication courses as key contributors to AMR. Dr. Srinivas emphasized that unnecessary antibiotic use can render these drugs ineffective when truly needed, particularly in hospital settings. AIIMS Delhi has implemented an infection prevention program to ensure antibiotics are prescribed only when necessary, following culture tests. The Director also advised against visiting AIIMS for minor ailments to avoid overcrowding and ensure critical patients receive necessary care.
Why It's Important?
The misuse of antibiotics poses a significant public health risk by contributing to antimicrobial resistance, which can make common infections difficult or impossible to treat. This issue is particularly pressing in India, where over-the-counter access to antibiotics is prevalent. The warnings from AIIMS and the Prime Minister aim to raise awareness and encourage responsible antibiotic use. If unchecked, AMR could lead to a future where routine surgeries and minor infections become life-threatening due to ineffective antibiotics. The healthcare system could face increased strain, with longer hospital stays and higher medical costs. Public awareness and adherence to medical guidelines are crucial in combating this growing threat.
