The National Energy System Operator (NESO) in the UK forecasts a historic low in carbon intensity for the electricity grid on Christmas Day 2025. This prediction is attributed to favorable weather conditions, including mild and windy weather, which are
conducive to wind and solar power generation. The UK has seen an increase in renewable energy capacity, with an additional 2GW of wind and 3GW of solar generation added to the network this year, bringing the total operational renewable capacity to 53GW. Furthermore, the rollout of battery energy storage has enhanced the grid's ability to utilize clean electricity, with 3.1GW of battery storage capacity added since last Christmas, totaling nearly 9GW. In 2023, the carbon intensity on December 25th was recorded at 30 million grams of CO2, significantly lower than in previous years.
