What's Happening?
Seaspan has completed a new outfitting pier at its Vancouver shipyards, investing $140 million to enhance its shipbuilding capabilities. Constructed in partnership with design and engineering firm Stantec, the pier measures 890 feet by 60 feet and is designed to support heavy outfitting operations. It replaces a timber pier that has been in existence for six decades and is engineered to withstand future sea level rise, extreme storm surges, and seismic hazards. The facility is already in use, with the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Protecteur being outfitted there. The pier is part of Seaspan's efforts to secure contracts under Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy.
Why It's Important?
The investment in the new pier is crucial for Seaspan to maintain its competitive edge in Canada's shipbuilding industry. By enhancing its infrastructure, Seaspan is better positioned to bid for large navy and coast guard vessel contracts. The pier's design addresses environmental and operational challenges, ensuring long-term resilience and efficiency in shipbuilding operations. This development supports Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy, which aims to modernize the country's naval capabilities and boost the shipbuilding sector.
