What's Happening?
Vietnam has achieved a health insurance coverage rate of 95.2% by the end of 2025, surpassing its five-year target set by the 13th National Party Congress. This milestone was announced by Vietnam Social Security, marking the highest coverage rate recorded
in the country. The achievement comes despite challenges such as natural disasters and socio-economic difficulties. In 2025, the healthcare system in Vietnam recorded approximately 195.5 million medical visits covered by health insurance, with total claims reaching around $6.1 billion. The success of the health insurance program is attributed to the effective management of the Health Insurance Fund, which has been crucial in meeting the increasing demand for healthcare services.
Why It's Important?
Vietnam's success in achieving high health insurance coverage is significant as it demonstrates the country's commitment to improving public health and access to medical services. This achievement not only enhances the well-being of the population but also strengthens the healthcare infrastructure, making it more resilient to future challenges. The high coverage rate is expected to lead to better health outcomes and reduced financial burdens on individuals seeking medical care. Additionally, the focus on improving the quality and sustainability of the health insurance system aligns with Vietnam's long-term goals for healthcare reform, potentially serving as a model for other countries aiming to expand healthcare access.
What's Next?
Following the achievement of its coverage goals, Vietnam plans to shift its focus from expanding coverage to enhancing the quality and effectiveness of its health insurance system. Future policies will aim to improve the sustainability of the system, ensuring that it can continue to meet the healthcare needs of the population. This may involve reforms to healthcare delivery, investment in medical infrastructure, and initiatives to address emerging health challenges. The direction set by the 14th Party Congress will guide these efforts, with an emphasis on maintaining high coverage rates while improving service quality.
