What's Happening?
The Automotive Body Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (ABMAP) has called on the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to resume the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP). This initiative aims to replace aging jeepneys and public utility
vehicles with modern, efficient, low-emission, and safer alternatives. ABMAP's executive director, Edgar Manuel, emphasized the need for safe and dignified travel for the Filipino public, highlighting that while thousands of modern vehicles are in use, many commuters still rely on outdated and unsafe transportation. The association believes that reviving the PTMP is crucial for public safety and national development, as it would stimulate the local manufacturing sector, generate employment, and support local parts makers.
Why It's Important?
The modernization of public transport in the Philippines is seen as a long-term investment in the country's future, prioritizing safety, sustainability, and efficiency. By accelerating the PTMP, the transport sector can be strengthened, benefiting millions of Filipinos who rely on public transport daily. The initiative also promises to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency for drivers and operators, providing a more reliable and comfortable experience for commuters. The call for modernization reflects broader economic and environmental goals, aiming to enhance the mobility ecosystem and support local industries.
What's Next?
ABMAP has expressed readiness to collaborate with government agencies like the DOTr and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to shape practical guidelines, including technical standards and financing mechanisms for operators and cooperatives. The association is urging the DOTr to take decisive action to bring the PTMP back on track, emphasizing that local manufacturers and operators are prepared to transition to modern vehicles. The successful implementation of the program could lead to significant improvements in public transport infrastructure and commuter experiences across the nation.
