What's Happening?
A recent statewide poll conducted by the Women’s Foundation of Colorado reveals significant economic and safety concerns among women and nonbinary individuals in Colorado. The poll, which surveyed 725 registered voters, found that 84% of respondents believe
the cost of living is increasing faster than their incomes. This financial strain is leading many women to delay healthcare, reduce retirement savings, and incur debt. Additionally, 42% of respondents have turned to AI or social media for health-related questions due to the high costs of professional medical care. Safety concerns were also prominent, with 59% of women under 35 worried about sexual assault and over half of Black and LGBTQ+ respondents fearing hate crimes. The poll aims to inform policy and guide gubernatorial candidates on issues important to women.
Why It's Important?
The findings of this poll underscore the pressing economic challenges faced by women in Colorado, highlighting a broader issue of gender-based economic inequality. The rising cost of living, coupled with inadequate healthcare access, poses significant barriers to financial stability and well-being for women. This situation may lead to long-term economic disadvantages, as women are forced to prioritize immediate financial needs over long-term investments like retirement savings. The safety concerns further emphasize the need for policies that address both economic and social security for women. These insights are crucial for policymakers and candidates, as they reflect the urgent need for systemic changes to support women's economic and personal security.
What's Next?
The Women’s Foundation of Colorado plans to use the poll results to influence policy discussions and provide gubernatorial candidates with a clearer understanding of the issues affecting women. A forum co-hosted by Rocky Mountain PBS is scheduled to discuss these findings with governor candidates, potentially shaping future policy agendas. Stakeholders, including political leaders and advocacy groups, may respond by proposing initiatives aimed at reducing economic disparities and enhancing safety measures for women. The poll's insights could lead to increased advocacy for healthcare reforms and economic policies that better support women and nonbinary individuals in Colorado.
