What's Happening?
ASU alumnus Jack Blair has released his debut documentary, 'This Is Not a Draft,' which explores the experiences of 10 post-9/11 veterans. The film delves into their motivations for serving, the personal costs of their service, and their journeys afterward,
with a central theme emphasizing the importance of community in preventing veteran suicide. Blair, a Navy veteran from 2004-2009 and an Army Reserve counterintelligence agent who deployed to Afghanistan in 2013, was motivated to create the film after the tragic death of his 5-year-old son in 2014. The documentary, made in partnership with Death Denied Productions, features interviews with veterans, including Shawn Banzhaf, executive director of the Pat Tillman Veterans Center. The film will have its ASU debut with two open university screenings on November 3 at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa and November 5 at the Marston Exploration Theater on ASU's Tempe campus, ahead of ASU’s Salute to Service celebration.
Why It's Important?
This documentary is important as it sheds light on the often-overlooked struggles of post-9/11 veterans, particularly concerning mental health and the critical role of community support. By focusing on veteran suicide prevention, the film addresses a significant public health issue affecting military personnel and their families across the U.S. The personal motivation of Jack Blair, stemming from his own profound loss and subsequent battle with depression, adds a layer of authenticity and urgency to the narrative. The involvement of ASU and the Pat Tillman Veterans Center in the screenings highlights the academic and institutional commitment to supporting veterans and fostering dialogue around their experiences. The film's message of community and connection can resonate broadly, potentially influencing public perception and encouraging greater support for veteran services and mental health initiatives.
What's Next?
Following its ASU debut, 'This Is Not a Draft' is expected to continue its screenings, potentially reaching a wider audience. The film's focus on community and veteran suicide prevention suggests it could be used as a tool for advocacy and education within veteran support organizations and mental health communities. The discussions generated by the documentary may prompt further initiatives and resources aimed at assisting veterans in their transition to civilian life and addressing mental health challenges. The film's success could also inspire other veterans and filmmakers to share their stories, contributing to a richer understanding of military service and its long-term impacts.
Beyond the Headlines
The documentary 'This Is Not a Draft' delves into the deeper societal implications of military service, particularly the often-invisible wounds of war. It challenges the traditional narrative of heroism by exploring the profound personal costs and the subsequent need for robust community and mental health support. The film implicitly critiques the societal structures that may leave veterans feeling isolated, highlighting the ethical responsibility of communities to reintegrate and support those who have served. The personal journey of Jack Blair, transforming his grief into a powerful message of connection, underscores the therapeutic potential of storytelling and collective healing. This work contributes to a broader cultural shift towards acknowledging and addressing the complex realities faced by veterans beyond their active duty.
