What's Happening?
Vermont is continuing its initiative to provide free access to state parks for low-income families through an expanded version of the Park Access Fund. This program, which has been in place since 2016,
allows individuals and families who utilize services such as Reach Up, 3SquaresVT, Fuel Assistance, and others to enjoy unlimited day-use entry to state parks. The initiative is a collaboration between Vermont State Parks, the Department for Children and Families' Economic Services Division, and the Department of Health's WIC Program. A survey by Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business found that 75% of participants would not have been able to visit the parks without this program, and over 99% plan to use it again. The program runs from the end of May through October and does not include camping or equipment rentals.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it promotes inclusivity and accessibility to natural resources for low-income families, who might otherwise be unable to afford such recreational activities. By providing free access to state parks, the program encourages outdoor activities, which can have positive impacts on physical and mental health. Additionally, it supports community engagement and environmental awareness among diverse populations. The program's success, as indicated by the high percentage of repeat users, underscores its importance in fostering a connection with nature for those who might face economic barriers.
What's Next?
The continuation of the program depends on ongoing fundraising efforts. Vermont Parks Forever, the organization behind the initiative, is actively seeking contributions to ensure the program's sustainability. As the program expands, it may inspire similar initiatives in other states, promoting broader access to natural resources across the country. Stakeholders, including community partners and government agencies, will likely continue to collaborate to enhance and protect Vermont's state parks while ensuring the program's longevity.
