What's Happening?
The CGIAR has appointed Dr. Namukolo Covic as the Head of its Liaison Office for Africa, effective January 1, 2026. Dr. Covic will support the CGIAR Continental Champion for Africa, currently Dr. Simeon
Ehui, in advancing CGIAR's mission to transform food, land, and water systems across the continent. The Liaison Office, based in Addis Ababa, aims to strengthen CGIAR's engagement with African institutions, ensuring that its scientific efforts align with Africa's priorities and policy agendas. Dr. Covic brings extensive experience in nutrition and food systems innovation, having previously served as CGIAR Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

This appointment underscores CGIAR's commitment to fostering strong partnerships and leadership within Africa to address critical challenges in food security and sustainable development. What's Next?
Dr. Covic will continue to serve as the ILRI Director General’s representative in Ethiopia during a transition period until June 2026, ensuring continuity while a successor is recruited. CGIAR will focus on strengthening its collaborative approach with African institutions to advance sustainable and inclusive food systems. The organization is expected to further integrate its efforts with continental frameworks like the AU Agenda 2063 and the CAADP framework.
