What's Happening?
David 'Dugo' Leitner, a Holocaust survivor, is being honored through 'Operation Dugo,' an initiative where participants eat falafel to commemorate his survival and resilience. This event, held annually on January 18, marks the day Leitner survived a death
march from Auschwitz. Thousands of people, including students, soldiers, and Jewish communities worldwide, participate by eating falafel and sharing photos on social media. The initiative aims to strengthen the bond between Israel and world Jewry, celebrating the triumph of the human spirit. This year, a special stamp commemorating Leitner's story will be issued by the Israel Postal Company.
Why It's Important?
Operation Dugo serves as a poignant reminder of the Holocaust's impact and the resilience of its survivors. By turning a personal tradition into a national event, it fosters a sense of unity and remembrance among Jewish communities globally. The initiative also highlights the importance of preserving survivor stories for future generations, ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust remain relevant. The issuance of a commemorative stamp further institutionalizes this remembrance, providing official recognition and encouraging broader public engagement with Holocaust history.
