The candidates in the runoff are former Georgia state Representative Roger Bruce and former Cobb County Board of Education member Jaha V. Howard. In the initial November election, Howard received the most votes among six candidates, securing 5,134 votes, which accounted for 32.63% of the total. Bruce followed with 3,992 votes, representing 25.37%. Both candidates are Democrats.
