What's Happening?
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has announced the opening of applications for its Vets Ready Employer Initiative. This program, launched during National Military Appreciation Month, aims to recognize Wisconsin employers who excel
in hiring and retaining veterans. The initiative awards a Vets Ready designation to businesses that demonstrate a commitment to veteran employment, support systems, and community engagement. Applications are open until July 31, 2026, with winners announced on Veterans Day. The program, which began in 2020, offers gold or silver designations to small, medium, and large businesses. Last year, 25 employers received recognition. The DWD collaborates with various organizations, including the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, to promote this initiative.
Why It's Important?
The Vets Ready Employer Initiative is significant as it highlights the value of veterans in the workforce and encourages businesses to leverage their skills and experiences. By recognizing employers who prioritize veteran employment, the program not only supports veterans' transition to civilian life but also enhances workforce diversity and capability. This initiative can lead to increased veteran employment rates, benefiting both the veterans and the businesses that employ them. Additionally, it strengthens community ties and promotes a culture of support for military personnel, which can have positive social and economic impacts across Wisconsin.
What's Next?
Employers interested in the Vets Ready designation can apply through the Job Center of Wisconsin website. The DWD will continue to promote the initiative and encourage participation through its Office of Veteran Employment Services. As the application deadline approaches, businesses are expected to enhance their veteran support systems to qualify for the award. The announcement of winners on Veterans Day will likely bring attention to successful practices in veteran employment, potentially inspiring other employers to adopt similar strategies.
