What's Happening?
The Marathon County Health Department and the City of Wausau are offering free lead-safe training for local contractors from February 23-27. The training aims to equip contractors with the necessary skills
and certifications for lead abatement work in homes built before 1978, which may contain lead-based paint hazards. The program is funded by a U.S. Housing and Urban Development Lead Capacity Building grant. Contractors can choose from various courses, including Lead OSHA, Lead-Safe Renovator, and Lead Abatement Supervisor. A $100 refundable deposit is required to secure a spot, which will be returned upon completion of the training.
Why It's Important?
This initiative addresses public health concerns related to lead exposure, particularly in older homes. By providing free training, the program supports local contractors in expanding their business opportunities while ensuring they meet safety standards. The training also contributes to community health by reducing lead exposure risks, which can have severe health impacts, especially on children. The program highlights the importance of collaboration between local government and contractors in addressing environmental health issues and improving housing safety standards.
What's Next?
Contractors interested in participating are encouraged to register early due to limited spots. The training is expected to enhance the local workforce's capacity to handle lead-related projects, potentially leading to more comprehensive lead abatement efforts in the region. As contractors complete the training, the community may see an increase in lead-safe renovations, contributing to improved public health outcomes. The success of this program could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges with lead exposure in older housing.
