The University of Illinois Cancer Center has initiated a new cancer research training and career program, the Advancing Urban Students in Medicine (AUSM) Post-Baccalaureate Program. This two-year certificate program is designed for post-baccalaureate
scholars from diverse backgrounds who aspire to pursue doctoral degrees in science, public health, or healthcare professions. The program aims to prepare these individuals for competitive graduate and professional programs, ultimately leading to careers in cancer research. Funding for this initiative comes from a $660,000 grant provided by the American Cancer Society (ACS) through its Center for Innovation in Cancer Research Training (CICRT) Post-Baccalaureate Fellows Grant. The AUSM program is a full-time commitment, running Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional weekend activities, and offers an annual stipend of $35,000. Applications for the program are currently being accepted, with a deadline of October 18, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. CT, and the program is slated to begin in January 2027. The program was designed by the Cancer Center's Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) team, led by Associate Director Larisa Nonn, PhD, and Director Ifeanyi Beverly Chukwudozie, MBA, MPH, with Paul Grippo, PhD, serving as the grant's Principal Investigator.
