The Confederation of Environment Associations of Nilgiris (CEAN) has called upon the District Collector to address violations by tea estates in Tamil Nadu. According to Surjit K. Chaudhary, a retired IAS officer and chairperson of CEAN, these estates are
contravening the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Land Ceiling Act, 1961. Originally intended for tea cultivation, many buildings have been repurposed as food stores, restaurants, conference halls, and guest houses for tourism. This transformation has led to unauthorized access through forests, posing a threat to wildlife. Chaudhary highlighted that these actions violate Section 73 (iv) of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Act and contribute to ecological degradation by exerting unsustainable biotic pressure for monetary gain. He suggested a comprehensive survey of tea estates to identify violations and recommended that the Forest Department reassess permissions granted to these estates.
