Nicky Nieves, an Afro-Latina athlete born without a left hand, has found self-acceptance and success through playing sitting volleyball. Growing up in Queens, New York, and later moving to Kissimmee, Florida,
Nieves fell in love with volleyball in middle school. Despite her limb difference, she excelled in the sport, eventually earning a scholarship to play at Queens College. Her talent caught the attention of the U.S. women's sitting national team coach, leading to her inclusion in the team in 2011. Nieves has since become a two-time Paralympic gold medalist and a flag bearer for the 2024 Paralympic Games. Her journey in volleyball has helped her embrace her identity as a Black Latina and advocate for mental health and inclusivity in sports.
