What's Happening?
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson recently visited Sandhill View Academy in Sunderland to observe the Premier League Inspires program in action. The initiative, delivered by the Foundation of Light, the official charity of Sunderland AFC, uses football to empower young people by developing personal, social, employability, and life skills. The program has engaged over 40,000 young people across England and Wales, with more than 850 pupils participating in the Sunderland region this year alone. The program aims to improve school attendance, build confidence, and re-engage students with education. Premier League Inspires is expanding, with plans to increase the number of participating football club charities from 45 to 54 in the 2025/26 season.
Why It's Important?
The Premier League Inspires program is significant as it addresses educational disengagement among young people, a pressing issue in many communities. By leveraging the popularity of football, the program provides a unique approach to education, helping students develop essential skills and improve their academic performance. The initiative's expansion reflects its success and the growing recognition of sports as a tool for social change. The program's impact is supported by research from Sheffield Hallam University, which found improvements in student behavior and engagement. This initiative not only benefits students but also strengthens community ties and supports the broader educational system.
What's Next?
The Premier League Inspires program is set to expand further, with increased investment from the Premier League allowing more football club charities to participate. This expansion aligns with the government's Youth Guarantee initiative, which aims to support young people in education or employment. As the program grows, it is expected to reach more students, providing them with opportunities to develop skills and improve their educational outcomes. Continued collaboration between schools, charities, and the Premier League will be crucial in sustaining and enhancing the program's impact.
