What's Happening?
The Lobster Trap Recovery and Assessment Partnership (L-TRAP), a coalition including The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, has successfully recovered more than 4,000 lost and abandoned lobster traps from Long Island Sound. This initiative, launched in 2022,
brings together various organizations such as the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, Save the Sound, Project Oceanology, Remote Ecologist, commercial lobstermen from Connecticut and New York, and research scientists from The Maritime Aquarium. The primary goal of L-TRAP is to locate, recover, and study these 'ghost fishing' traps, which continue to trap marine animals and damage habitats long after being lost. The recovery efforts have removed over 200,000 pounds of marine debris and documented more than 46,000 animals across 86 species found in the recovered traps. Senior research scientist Justin Susarchick emphasized the effectiveness of collaborative conservation efforts.

What's Next?
L-TRAP's work is set to continue and expand, with 120 recovery trips planned for 2026 and 235 trips scheduled for 2027. The coalition recently debuted side-scan sonar technology, specifically a Humminbird XPLORE 12 system, to enhance the efficiency of trap location and recovery. This technology creates detailed seafloor images, potentially assisting in collection efforts in unfamiliar areas, whereas previous efforts relied heavily on the local knowledge of commercial captains. The ongoing data collection will further researchers' understanding of ghost fishing's ecological impacts and marine debris. The success of this program, bolstered by Connecticut legislation passed in 2019 authorizing the recovery of lost traps, is expected to foster stronger relationships within the commercial lobster industry, whose participation remains crucial for the program's long-term effectiveness and expansion.
