What's Happening?
WFAE, in collaboration with WUNC and Blue Ridge Public Radio, has released a zine aimed at educating the public about data centers. The publication serves as a guide to understanding the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of data centers, which have
become a contentious issue with each new project proposal. The zine provides insights into the trade-offs associated with data center development and offers a list of questions for communities to consider when a data center is proposed in their area.
Why It's Important?
Data centers are critical to the digital infrastructure, but their development can have significant environmental and social implications. They require substantial energy and water resources, which can strain local ecosystems and communities. By providing educational resources, WFAE aims to empower residents to make informed decisions and engage in discussions about the potential impacts of data centers. This initiative highlights the importance of public awareness and participation in local development projects.
