What's Happening?
The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) is enhancing its role as the state's primary technology authority by advancing cybersecurity measures and expanding shared technology services. For Fiscal Year 2026, DIR has been allocated a budget of $779
million, with $9.3 million specifically designated for IT capital projects. This includes significant investments in cybersecurity, with $300 million in general revenue dedicated to this area, alongside the newly launched Texas Cyber Command. The department, led by Executive Director Amanda Crawford, is responsible for managing IT services across more than 500 public organizations, including state agencies and local governments. DIR's strategic initiatives focus on modernizing technology services, fostering innovation, and promoting digital equity through broadband expansion.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of DIR's cybersecurity and technology services is crucial for safeguarding Texas's public sector against cyber threats. With increasing cyberattacks targeting government infrastructure, the investment in cybersecurity is a proactive measure to protect sensitive data and maintain the integrity of state operations. The focus on modernizing technology services and promoting digital equity also supports the state's economic growth by ensuring that all communities have access to essential digital resources. This initiative not only enhances the efficiency of government operations but also positions Texas as a leader in government technology innovation.
What's Next?
As DIR continues to implement its strategic plan for 2025-2029, the department will focus on expanding its Innovation Lab and establishing a new AI Division. These efforts aim to drive technological advancements and improve service delivery across the state. The Texas Cyber Command will play a pivotal role in strengthening the state's cybersecurity posture, absorbing existing DIR resources and personnel to enhance its capabilities. Stakeholders, including state agencies and local governments, are expected to collaborate closely with DIR to leverage these new resources and initiatives.
