What's Happening?
WellSense has successfully trialed its FiberLine Intervention Conveyance System (FliCS) in the Permian Basin. This pioneering technology, developed by WellSense's founder Dan Purkis, uses jet-propelled,
battery-powered mechanisms to deploy fiber optics rapidly into highly deviated wells. The trial demonstrated the system's ability to deploy fiber in a 19,000-ft horizontal well in just 50 minutes, significantly faster than traditional methods. The technology supports distributed acoustic and temperature sensing, enhancing well surveillance and treatment performance.
Why It's Important?
The successful trial of FliCS represents a major advancement in well diagnostics, offering a cost-effective and low-risk solution for horizontal wells. This technology can improve fluid placement understanding and support matrix acid stimulation, potentially reducing the carbon footprint of well operations. The rapid deployment capability of FliCS could revolutionize well surveillance, providing operators with high-resolution data acquisition and expanded injection profiling, which are critical for optimizing reservoir management.
What's Next?
WellSense plans to showcase FliCS at the ADIPEC 2025 conference, with a commercial launch expected in early 2026. The company aims to introduce a slimmer version of the technology for smaller-diameter tubing applications. The industry will be watching closely to see how this technology impacts well operations and whether it leads to broader adoption across different regions and well types.
