Mobile midwifery clinics are emerging as a solution to address the significant disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black women in the U.S. These clinics, such as the one operated by the Southern Birth Justice Network in Miami-Dade County, provide
prenatal, postpartum, and general women's health care directly to communities. The initiative aims to offer culturally competent care in a relaxed setting, addressing issues like implicit bias and lack of access to regular prenatal care, which contribute to higher maternal mortality rates among Black women. The clinics are part of a broader effort to preserve the legacy of Black midwives, who have historically played crucial roles in their communities despite facing systemic racism and exclusion from mainstream healthcare systems.
