What's Happening?
The Northern Territory is set to welcome more skilled migrants in the 2025-26 period, with the Australian Government confirming its full allocation for the General Skilled Migration Program. The Territory has
been granted 1,650 nomination places, an increase from 1,600 last year. This includes 850 nominations for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and 800 nominations for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill emphasized the importance of this boost, stating that workforce shortages are prevalent across both public and private sectors. The NT Government has been advocating for stronger regional migration settings to support economic growth and fill skill shortages.
Why It's Important?
The increase in skilled migrant intake is crucial for the Northern Territory as it faces ongoing workforce challenges. Migration is seen as a key factor in stabilizing the population and supporting economic growth. By attracting skilled migrants, the Territory aims to address persistent skill shortages, particularly in remote and regional communities. This move is expected to benefit local businesses by providing them with the necessary workforce to thrive. However, the government remains committed to prioritizing jobs for local Territorians first, ensuring that migration complements rather than competes with local employment.
What's Next?
All streams of the Northern Territory’s nomination program will officially open on November 24, 2025. This will provide clarity for businesses, skilled workers, and migration agents ahead of the new program year. The NT Government will continue to advocate for flexible migration settings to support regional growth, while maintaining a focus on local employment priorities.
