What's Happening?
The Younes & Soraya Nazarian Family Foundation has redirected its endowment at the University of Southern California (USC) to focus on Judaic studies and antisemitism education, in partnership with Hebrew Union College (HUC). This decision comes in response
to increased Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) activities on campuses. Originally intended for USC's school of fine arts, the endowment was repurposed after the school's refusal to host Israeli scholars. The new initiative aims to educate students on extremism and antisemitism as gateways to broader bigotry, offering courses designed for both Jewish and non-Jewish students.
Why It's Important?
This shift in funding highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Jewish communities in academic settings, particularly in light of BDS movements. By focusing on antisemitism education, the initiative seeks to foster understanding and counteract rising hate. The move also underscores the role of philanthropy in shaping educational priorities and addressing societal issues. It reflects a strategic response to campus dynamics and the need for inclusive educational programs that address global issues through the lens of antisemitism.
