What's Happening?
Astronomers have confirmed the existence of four white dwarfs within 65 light-years of Earth, previously hidden by the glare of their red dwarf companions. This discovery was made possible through ultraviolet observations from the Hubble Space Telescope,
which allowed researchers to distinguish the faint remnants from the brighter stars. The study, led by the University of Warwick and the University of Colorado Boulder, was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. One of these white dwarfs, part of the G 203-47 system, is now recognized as the ninth closest white dwarf to the Sun. The findings highlight the challenges in detecting such stellar remnants due to the masking effect of their brighter companions.
