United Power Generation & Distribution Company Ltd. (UPGDCL) has been recognized with the Bangladesh Operational Innovation of the Year - Energy award at the Asian Innovation Excellence Awards 2025. The award was given for UPGDCL's Eco-friendly Steam
Initiative, which transforms waste heat from natural gas-powered generation into industrial-grade steam. This initiative, launched in 2014, serves export-oriented industries in the Dhaka and Chattogram Export Processing Zones (EPZs), providing a sustainable and economically viable alternative to conventional fuel systems. The system has generated over 294 million kilograms of steam, preventing nearly 50,000 tons of CO₂ emissions that would have been produced by diesel-fired systems. The initiative uses a closed-loop waste heat recovery network, integrating high-efficiency boilers, automated water treatment, insulated pipelines, and digital monitoring to ensure consistent performance.

The Eco-friendly Steam Initiative by UPGDCL is significant as it offers a sustainable solution to industrial energy needs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and production costs.
