What's Happening?
VinUniversity, in collaboration with partner institutions, has launched the i-CanManage program, an artificial intelligence-based mobile health (mHealth) intervention designed to empower Vietnamese female cancer survivors beyond their recovery. Led by
Dr. Huyen Thi Hoa Nguyen, Director of Nursing Program at VinUniversity's College of Health Sciences, the program aims to bridge the post-treatment care gap for women who often face significant physical and psychological challenges after intensive cancer treatment. Despite high survival rates for female cancers in Vietnam (80-90%), survivors frequently experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, and menopausal-like effects. The i-CanManage program adapts elements from international frameworks, such as the Women’s Wellness After Cancer Program, to provide structured guidance on physical activity and symptom management. It combines educational materials, wearable technology (Fitbit Charge 5), and a dedicated AI-driven smartphone application to track health metrics, generate personalized exercise plans, and promote long-term behavioral change.

What's Next?
The i-CanManage program is currently undergoing a trial with comprehensive evaluations at baseline, week 6, and week 12. These assessments measure physical activity levels, symptom severity, chronic disease self-efficacy, self-care practices, and overall quality of life, along with app usability and user satisfaction. The study is conducted under strict ethical guidelines, ensuring participant safety and data privacy, with control group participants gaining access to the intervention after trial completion. The data generated from this trial will be crucial for validating the effectiveness of the AI-based mHealth intervention and informing future digital health innovations in Vietnam and potentially other regions. The research team anticipates that the program will demonstrate how mHealth technology can effectively bridge healthcare gaps and empower cancer survivors, paving the way for broader implementation and adaptation of similar models in oncology care.
