A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) due to a computer glitch that has denied disability benefits to tens of thousands of veterans for decades. The glitch, found in the Veterans Appeals Control and Locator
System, automatically closed appeals when it incorrectly determined that veterans had missed deadlines. This error affected veterans like Roni Freund and Marvin Matthewson, who filed timely appeals but were dismissed due to the system's malfunction. A proposed settlement could offer more than 90,000 veterans and their families a chance to have their cases reviewed. The U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims is currently reviewing the settlement, which would require the VA to manually process 28,258 appeals and notify another 64,599 veterans that they can request a review of their cases.
