What's Happening?
In Pocatello, a group of approximately 20 volunteers will conduct a walk audit around Syringa Elementary School to assess the safety and accessibility of walking routes for students. This initiative, scheduled for Thursday, aims to document street conditions
and identify potential safety concerns for children and parents walking or biking to school. The findings will contribute to a School Travel Plans Report, which will be used by the city and community partners in grant applications. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Southeast Idaho Council of Governments (SICOG), the city of Pocatello, Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25, and the engineering firm Kimley-Horn. The initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage walking to school, which has been shown to improve student focus and reduce transportation costs.
Why It's Important?
The walk audit is significant as it addresses the safety and accessibility of school routes, which are crucial for encouraging more students to walk to school. Walking to school has multiple benefits, including improved student focus, reduced absences and tardies, and cost savings for families and the school district. Additionally, it fosters a sense of community as students interact with their peers and neighbors. The initiative also highlights the importance of community involvement in enhancing local infrastructure and safety. By gathering diverse perspectives from volunteers, the project aims to create a comprehensive understanding of the current conditions and potential improvements needed.
What's Next?
Following the walk audit, the collected data will be compiled into a School Travel Plans Report. This report will be used to apply for grants aimed at improving the safety and accessibility of school routes. The organizers hope to expand the initiative to other schools in the area, promoting walking as a viable and safe option for students. The community meeting scheduled for the same day will allow parents and community members to share their experiences and insights, further informing the report and future projects.
