What's Happening?
Northumbrian Water has employed Bracken, a four-year-old Labrador, to assist in ecological surveys across operational sites in the North East. Bracken's role involves detecting wildlife such as hedgehogs
and nesting birds before vegetation clearance and hedgerow cutting activities commence. This initiative aims to protect wildlife and conserve natural habitats, ensuring minimal disruption to biodiversity. Bracken is trained by Barrett Environmental Ltd, an ecological consultancy, and his handler, Trina Barrett, who is a certified conservation detection dog handler.
Why It's Important?
The use of sniffer dogs like Bracken represents an innovative approach to environmental conservation, highlighting the importance of protecting wildlife amidst industrial activities. This initiative by Northumbrian Water underscores the growing emphasis on sustainability and ecological responsibility within the business sector. By ensuring wildlife is safely relocated before work begins, the company is taking proactive steps to minimize its environmental impact, which is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and supporting conservation efforts.
