What's Happening?
Bluestone Mines Tasmania Joint Venture Pty Ltd (BMTJV) has selected ABB to modernize the main production hoist at the Renison Tin Mine, Australia's largest tin mine. This upgrade is crucial as the mine operates at greater depths, necessitating reliable and efficient machinery. The modernization will replace a legacy hoist system from the 1990s, addressing space constraints with an innovative layout that retrofits new equipment into the existing switch room and introduces a new surface-mounted room for control and safety systems. ABB's upgrade includes a digitally integrated control system to ensure reliable performance, reduce downtime, and streamline maintenance, while enhancing energy efficiency for deeper mine operations. The project began in early 2025 and is expected to be commissioned in 2026.
Why It's Important?
The modernization of the hoist system at Renison Tin Mine is significant due to the increasing global demand for tin, projected to reach 420,000 tons annually by the end of the decade. This upgrade supports the long-term future of the mine by improving safety, system availability, and sustainability. The new system offers a cost-effective haulage solution compared to traditional trucking, reducing heat load and congestion, and achieving lower production costs. The collaboration between BMTJV and ABB reflects a commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and preparing for future production demands.
What's Next?
Commissioning of the upgraded hoist system is expected in 2026. Both ABB and BMTJV are committed to showcasing the project's progress through ongoing collaboration. The installation includes ABB's latest Safety Plus hoist control platform, a fully SIL 3-certified system meeting high safety standards. ABB will provide a new DC converter, brake stands, hydraulic power system, shaft communication system, and comprehensive engineering and commissioning services.
Beyond the Headlines
The modernization project highlights the importance of sustainable mining practices and the role of technology in enhancing operational efficiency. By reducing reliance on traditional trucking, the project contributes to environmental sustainability and cost reduction. The collaboration between ABB and BMTJV demonstrates the potential for tailored solutions that balance safety, performance, and sustainability in the mining industry.
