What's Happening?
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is evaluating options to replace its FPS-117 long-range air surveillance radar, which has been in operation since 1998. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance the RSAF's Island Air Defence system, which integrates
multiple sensors to protect Singapore's airspace. The FPS-117 radar, with a detection range of up to 250 nautical miles, is a critical component of this network. The RSAF is also replacing its portable search and target acquisition radar with the Giraffe 1X radar from Saab, mounted on a new tactical vehicle.
Why It's Important?
The replacement of the FPS-117 radar is crucial for maintaining Singapore's air defense capabilities amid evolving security threats. Upgrading to more advanced radar systems ensures that the RSAF can continue to effectively monitor and protect its airspace. This initiative reflects Singapore's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture and adapting to technological advancements in military surveillance. The decision also has implications for defense contractors and technology providers, who may compete to supply the new radar systems.
