What's Happening?
The Rochester Public Library is offering a variety of events and activities for teens throughout October. The Teen Fall Reading program, which began on September 8th and continues until December 20th, allows individuals aged 11 (entering 6th grade) to 18
to sign up via the Beanstack app or the library's website. Participants can earn prizes and enter raffles to be drawn on December 21st. Additionally, Spaulding NHS members can earn volunteer hours by reading and writing reviews through the same Beanstack platform. Drop-in programs are scheduled for Wednesdays after school, and specific events include a 'Superman on the Big Screen' showing on October 19th, Lego Coding on October 20th, and Spooky Terrariums on October 26th. The library also hosts regular writing and book groups in the teen room, requiring no prior registration. Amy Lemelin, Teen Librarian, emphasized that the library provides a space for teens to study, socialize, engage in creative activities, or simply read.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives by the Rochester Public Library are crucial for fostering literacy, community engagement, and personal development among Rochester's youth. By offering diverse activities, from reading challenges to coding and creative workshops, the library provides valuable educational and recreational opportunities outside of the traditional school environment. The volunteer hour program for Spaulding NHS members not only supports academic requirements but also instills a sense of civic responsibility and encourages participation in community services. Such programs can help bridge educational gaps, promote critical thinking, and offer a safe and stimulating environment for teens, potentially reducing juvenile delinquency and enhancing overall well-being. The emphasis on both structured and drop-in activities ensures accessibility for a wide range of interests and schedules, contributing to a more engaged and well-rounded youth population in Rochester.
